Is ED recovery just an illusion?
Jun 27, 2025
Are you overwhelmed by all the contradictory messages in the ED recovery space? If so, you’re not alone. There’s so much propaganda about the “right” way to recover, including:
- Smash the scales
- Delete the calorie counting apps
- Go “all in”
- Stop all movement and rest
- Take “opposite action”
These new rules and labels create what I call the “recovery trap.”
For many (autistic) people, the eating disorder develops as an adaptive response to existential angst, a sense of alienation, and feeling completely overwhelmed by neurotypical society.
Eating adaptations create boundaries in a boundless world, offering the false promise of “If you just do the ED perfectly, you’ll be safe.”
But when you realize the eating disorder isn’t safe at all, you look for a new map – this is the map of recovery.
It’s this “recovery map” that leads us to feeling more lost, more confused, and more overwhelmed, because the path we’re desperately searching for doesn’t actually exist!
After all, what is a map? It’s nothing but a predetermined path that someone else has already traveled – in other words, it’s an “evidence-based” way out.
But how can you discover your unique version of freedom when you merely try to follow in another person’s footsteps?
THIS is why I prefer the term “discovery” over “recovery” – because THAT is what full freedom is actually about. The journey to freedom isn’t about recovering from anything. It’s about discovering your true being. It’s about discovering what you want out of life and how you can use your strengths to unlock your authentic self.
Helping you embark on your discovery journey is exactly why I wrote How to Get Out of Quasi Recovery and created the accompanying Discovery Workbook.
Instead of giving you another labyrinth to get lost in, these resources help you forge your own path – one that honors your neurodivergence and helps you harness the gifts that you know in your heart you are capable of channeling.
Here’s what my dear friend and fellow ED recovery coach Victoria Kleinsman has to say about How to Get Out of Quasi Recovery:
“How to Get Out of Quasi Recovery is a truth-telling manifesto for anyone who’s fucking done with being stuck in quasi recovery. Livia bulldozes through the illusions of traditional recovery with fierce compassion, offering what truly sets us free: the permission to discover your authentic self beyond labels and limitations.
As someone who has walked the path of breaking free from an eating disorder, control, and conformity, I see my past on every page. This book isn’t here to coddle you – it’s here to wake you the fuck up to your power and intuition, and guides you to discover a life of genuine freedom.
So if you’re ready to stop blocking yourself from true freedom and liberation (on your terms), read this book. I must warn you though…be ready to fully meet yourself for the first time. Livia has written another incredible book that is going to change lives!”
Yes, because that’s what my mission is here: I want to change your life so you can fully meet yourself. So you can fully embrace the artist that is you – a being with so much creative potential. It’s time for you to stop hiding that part of yourself because honestly, what’s the point of living if you’ve already decided not to be all that you can be?
