Are you the victim or hero of your life?

Jun 09, 2025
Livia Sara and Wouter Kleinsman podcast on how to stop being a victim

Do you feel like the victim of your own life?

That’s how I felt for many years.

But I didn’t actually know I was a victim – and more specifically, I didn’t know I was choosing to be a victim.

This unconscious choice is always driven by fear. Some of my fears were:

  • Fear of being disliked
  • Fear of being judged & shamed
  • Fear that I couldn’t handle the responsibilities of being healthy
  • Fear that I couldn’t be a meaningful member of society
  • Fear of being existentially “wrong” in this world

Being a victim is safe. Or at least, it seems safer than the alternative, which is taking responsibility.

It seems to much safer to chase external validation through people-pleasing and being “the best” than to accept yourself as you are – because what if people don’t “like” the authentic you?

It seems to much safer to say you can’t trust yourself around food because “diet culture tells you so” than to STOP conforming and to choose your own way. After all, there’s no qualification for creating your own way, right?

It seems to much safer to hide behind the mask of fear and limitation because then you don’t have to face your own vastness – the part of you that is painfully aware of your potential. The part of you that knows, deep down, that you have incredible gifts to share with the world.

Here’s the thing, my friend: the story you tell yourself is the story that narrates your life.

If you tell yourself you “can’t recover,” you will not recover.

If you tell yourself you’ll “never be good enough,” you never will be.

If you tell yourself you ”must stay on the lookout for signs of relapse,” you will forever remain shackled to the eating disorder in one way or another.

Not because any of the above are objective truths (how could they be? You’re a subjective human!), but because our beliefs about what’s possible for us are self-fulfilling prophecies.

To create your unique version of freedom – in every aspect of your life – it’s essential to become aware of what freedom even means to you.

This isn’t about following in someone else’s footsteps or matching your life with that one recovered YouTuber or Instagram influencer.

It’s about replacing judgment with curiosity so you can start discovering what it means for you to live in alignment with your true being.

Are you ready to discover the real you?

I’d love to work with you via 1-1 coaching – click here to learn more and apply!

Together, we’ll rewrite your story from one rooted in fear to one rooted in trust. After all, if we don’t have trust, we might as well go back to bed.

If you want to dive deeper into how the stories we tell ourselves become our reality, check out the podcast I recorded with Wouter Kleinsman (Victoria Kleinsman’s husband!). In the episode, he shares his journey to becoming label free – and you’ll be amazed at how his story parallels eating disorder recovery, even though he never had an ED.
