The Key in Recovery

The Key in Recovery

No amount of muscle or rigidity of a diet will give you the gains that REAL recovery does.

The gym won’t save you. Neither will a vegan diet…or any diet for that matter. Why do I say this? Because I’ve seen so many people credit their recovery to one of these things:

“Switching to a vegan diet is what allowed me to heal my relationship with food!”

or

“Joining the gym gave me the motivation to recover!”

I’m sure you’ve seen someone on Instagram claim one of these things, or something along the lines of. In my opinion, neither of these is the KEY to recovery! Just think about it...

Diets such as vegan, paleo, or cutting out any type of food, is a restrictive way of living. So basically by saying “[insert diet here]” is what allowed me to heal is like saying “switching to a restrictive diet is what helped me overcome restriction!” Sounds kinda like a paradox when you put it like that, no?

Same goes for the gym and recovery from exercise addiction. I see so many girls (and guys!) joining a gym ”to motivate them to recover”, sharing their “gains” (while still scared of putting on fat). This can also be worded as “I picked up exercising to overcome my exercise addiction!” Again, a paradox.

As much as many believe it works that way (and I don’t blame you with all the influence on social media!), it doesn’t. You can’t recover from any kind of addiction by staying in the addiction. There’s going to be people to which this post makes them upset, I know there is…but I’m not here to please your eating disorder.

I think it’s important to stay real and not give people false hope about the KEY in recovery...because it doesn’t lay in restrictive diets or obsessing about your body. It lays in ACCEPTING yourself for who you are and seeing your worth, NO LABELS attached!
